Vermont Club 251: Christmas in Vergennes with Currier and Ives
Founded in 1788, Vergennes is Vermont’s first city. It is also our state’s smallest city: two square miles of cuter than Currier and Ives. Decked out for the holidays, the town green features a snow-covered nativity scene that has a certain non-denominational sweetness (though some find it controversial) and each shop along Main Street is festive and welcoming. Imagine the Christmas carol “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” and substitute the words with something about Vergennes and you’ll start to get the picture.
The shops along Main Street in Vergennes are a canvas of contrast: Copper Crane Yoga and Stone Block Antiques; 3 Squares Cafe and Luigi’s Italian Specialties; Vergennes Wine and Jackman Fuels.
A new wood-fired bakery, called Vergennes Laundry, just opened this week. The bakery is a CSE – community supported enterprise. It is co-owned by supporting members who purchase $500 shares of the business. This share entitles members to a cappuccino and croissant twice a week, 2 loaves of bread and some cheese each week and lunch and a sweet for 2 once a week. The lattes are served French style, in bowls!
The event of the holiday season in Vergennes is the Christmas Ball at the Vergennes Opera House: December 17, 7-10 pm. Swing dancing with The Joe Levesque Big Band. Few things say “Merry Christmas” like a live big band!
