Run Vermont, Run! Middlebury Maple Run, Vermont City Marathon…

Vermont was ranked the healthiest state in the country in 2012 and 2011 – this is because we like to go outside and play in all seasons. In winter, we ski like banshees, in summer we sail and swim. Spring is the season for marathons – we need to burn off that extra sweet something we put on during maple season when there’s not enough snow to ski and its too muddy to hike.

We’ve got trots, fun runs, relays, 10Ks, half marathons, marathons, triathlons, even iron man. Roadracer.com lists 15 major races in Vermont in May alone. This weekend is the big kahuna: the Vermont City Marathon. Chittenden County is completely frenetic this week with preparations for the 25th annual running of the Burlington road race. The race is produced by RunVermont, a not-for-profit organization that promotes running in the Green Mountain state. The Vermont City Marathon had 2,737 finishers in 2010, with thousands of fans and visitors thronging to the Champlain Valley.

But Addison County is miles ahead of its neighbor to the north. We had our big marathon weeks ago! In 2013, its 5th year, the Middlebury Maple Run was held May 5th. Affectionately known as the Sweetest Half, the Middlebury Maple Run half marathon has a reputation for being well-organized and friendly. And the course goes right through town and the Middlebury College Campus – it’s beautiful. Take a look:

Proximity to great running courses is not yet included in Vermont MLS descriptions, but we found several Addison County homes that list trails in their property descriptions. Granted some of these are hiking trails and ski trails, but they seem like a trail runner’s paradise: you can view these great Vermont property listings here.

Best wishes to the marathoners this weekend!
