The Authors of Addison County: writers and real estate in Vermont

You may wonder what writers have to do with Vermont real estate. It’s pretty straightforward: writers are an important part of the landscape. According to the New York Times and the National Endowment for the Arts, Vermont has the most writers per capita than any other state. Let’s look at two of my favorites from Addison County:  Chris Bohjalian and Bill Schubart.

Chris Bohjalian is a New York Times best-selling author. Many of his books are about Vermont. His Midwives, about an emergency cesarean section at a home birth in rural Vermont, made Oprah’s list.

Among my favorite Bohjalian novels are The Double Blind and Skeletons at the Feast. The Double Blind is a completely gripping tale of a college girl who is attacked while riding her bike through Vermont’s back roads. The end of the book takes an unpredictable twist that had me literally jumping up and down with surprise and shock (and disappointment that the book was over).

Bohjalian lives in Lincoln. Here is a wonderfully disturbing story of the house he bought there almost 25 years ago.

Bill Schubart is an incredible story teller. He can turn a a joke about a guy getting a bee sting in a most inappropriate private part of his anatomy into a realistic tale that takes 45 minutes in the telling and will have you reaching for the calamine lotion (the ice packs? How does one treat such a sting?). He makes his tenure as an elementary school teacher sound like an adventure out of Easy Rider. I am envious of those lucky souls who were his students way back when.

Schubart writes about Vermont in fiction, humor and opinion pieces. He has published two works of fiction: The Lamoille Stories and Fat People. The Lamoille Stories was the Christmas gift I gave all of my friends and family the year it was published. And I can’t wait to read Fat People. I love Bill’s use of language and having just read Portia DeRossi’s  Unbearable Lightness, I look forward to the contrast of a writer’s perspective on weight.

Schubart has lived in Vermont since 1947. Even though he was born in New York and currently resides in Chittenden County, he lived in Lincoln for quite a while and Addison County still likes to claim him as its own son.

His opinion pieces and public speaking engagements are not to be missed. He is a commentator on Vermont public radio and a vigilant member of the Vermont community.

I do have a few great Addison County properties from whence you can launch your career as a Vermont Author. Addison County inspires me to garden and cook and breathe. Maybe it will inspire you to write? I have lived here in Lincoln for many years. I’ll be happy to show you around.
