2010 Census Vermont: Chittenden County and Everywhere else
The 2010 Census is out and the statistics published about Vermont confirm my choice of living and working here in Addison County: it’s still delightfully rural!
Chittenden County is where much of Vermont’s 625,741 official population lives. Burlington, South Burlington, Essex, and Colchester are our most populous cities (all in Chittenden County). Living near Chittenden County is the best of both worlds – I can still attend a performance at the Flynn Theater in Burlington and come home to Lincoln to see bear in my backyard. I live 45 minutes from downtown Burlington, 30 minutes from downtown Middlebury and 5 minutes from the middle of nowhere. Perfect.
Quality of life is still the predominant reason people from out-of-state move here. Vermont has a low crime rate, a high education rate, and a low poverty rate. Vermont has the 5th lowest unemployment rate in the country. But even with these great stats, the growth rate here in the last ten years was only 2.8% (perhaps the bears are having a bigger impact than I suspected).
However, the true gold in these figures can never be calculated by looking at the numbers. To live among the citizens of Vermont is viewed by many as a privilege. There is a depth of character among those who share the beauty, the weather and the wildlife. It has produced some renowned sons and daughters who have helped change the world. They still do!
Vermont’s a place where barns come painted
Red as a strong man’s heart
Where stout carts and stout boys in freckles
Are highest forms of art.
